The 'ud is played with a plectrum (a pick for plucking the strings), and is called risha in Arabic. A long flexible pick that places the wrist at a certain angle adds a tonal sound. Traditionally a sharpened eagle quill was used but today most plectrums are made from plastic. The thinner plectrum gives a delicate sound with subtle tone variations, while the heavier one emanates a louder, heavier tone. Today there art generally two types of ouds made; The Turkish and The Arabic. The Turkish 'ud is made from very light wood that gives a bright tone whereas the Arabic 'ud is somewhat larger and heavier with a deeper tone at the lower pitch. In reality the differences in sound are minimal.
